Medici Pope Leo X and his Musicians celebrate CHRISTMAS:1513


When Leo X was elected Pope (1513-1521) Vatican Choir had a manuscript of Josquin desPrez c.1450-1521 whose(c.1498) Missa "de Beata Virgine" is featured. Pope Leo had a collection of motets made for his nephew the Duke of Urbino on the occasion of his 1518 wedding, the gift known in history as the "Medici Codex". The composers apparently chosen by Jean Mouton (1459-1522), whose work was known and sung for Christmas, along with Antoine Brumel (c1475-1520); later composers also will be presented such as Cristobal Morales (c1500-1553), The earliest composer will be Johannes Martini (c.1432-1492), Whose Magnificat (tone2) is part of the Liturgy. Others rarely presented include Andes deSilva.
